The demise of a once rational mind. [Sep. 12th, 2008|12:05 pm]
Life without Deity

I fear the catholisation of one of my best friends is nearing completion. He was an atheist for as long as I can remember (from a Sikh family) and married a Catholic a few years ago. Ever since then he has slowly began to turn more and more religious. He started spouting random religious crap at me and our friends, like how it's sad that our banks are larger then our churches, and how he has observed wisdom declining as technology advances. One evening, when we got onto the topic of religion, he started talking about how he can feel a light inside his head when he prays, and how, when he losses something, St Antony helps him find it again, even though he was a scatterbrain before he got married! He's now told us that he will bring his kids up as Catholics too. All this from a once staunch atheist who thought all religion was a load of bollocks!

I feel there is nothing I can do to help him. It's so sad watching him deteriorate like this.

At this point, you can't help him. He might come to his senses on his own, but all chances are that the case is lost. Maybe if his friends caught this early, as soon as he started on the path, and gave him counter-arguments to all the basic stuff, it would have worked. But it's hard to catch these processes when they start, and at some point there is no return.

We did spot this beginning a few years ago, but he just brushed all counter arguments away, and always returned a few days later with some more hocus pocus crap.
